First Communion

We who are members of the Body of Christ (by our baptism) are given the gift of receiving Christ’s body and blood each time we participate in Mass, the Eucharistic liturgy.

First Communion preparation happens in the spring of the second grade year for all parish children. We recognize that parents are the primary educators of the faith. Therefore, parents will receive materials to prepare their child at home. This learning is reinforced in class, whether through the religion class at Immaculate Heart of Mary School or Sunday Family Faith program. In addition to home and classroom preparation, parents and children attend a retreat. First Communion is celebrated after Easter.

Baptism is required prior to reception of communion. Therefore, if your child has not been baptized s/he will need to also prepare for Baptism.

First Reconciliation is required prior to celebrating First Communion. Therefore, during the first semester of second grade, all children will prepare for this sacrament. Again parents will receive materials to teach their children and the learning will be reinforced in class. First Reconciliation is celebrated in late fall.

The fee of $75 per child covers both the reconciliation and communion textbooks, children’s chalice, group picture and other materials used to support your child’s preparation for these two sacraments.
