Our History

On October 13, 1948, 120 students started their first day at Immaculate Heart of Mary School. By the end of that first year, there were 141 students enrolled at the school. Sr,.Teresa Ann was the school's first principal.

At this time, the top floor of the school was used as the parish chapel since the church had not yet been built! All of the students attended school in only four class rooms (two grades per room!).

The parish (and the number of students) continued to grow throughout the 1950's and 1960's. Even with the development of St. Luke's parish and school, IHM continued to be over crowded with over 400 students in eight classrooms! In 1964, four more classrooms were added to the west end of the school.

Tuition for one student was $100 in 1973 ($225 per year for three or more children). Throughout most of the 1970's, Indianapolis area Catholic schools saw a decline in enrollment. IHM was not an exception to this trend.

In 1981, Helen Sullivan became principal at IHM until her retirement in 1993. In May 1988, the parish began construction of the Parish Activity Center. The Center was officially dedicated in November of that year.

Mrs. Jeannine Vesper became IHM principal in 1993. She was named 1996 Distinguished Principal of the Year by the National Catholic Education Association. Air-Conditioning was added to the building in 1998. New windows and a new art room (in the former boiler room) rounded out the school improvements. Annette Jones was hired as the school's first assistant principal in 1998. Mrs. Vesper retired in 2000 after serving the Archdiocese for over thirty-five years.

In July 2000, Mrs. Annette Jones became IHM's principal. More school improvements, such as a new library, new kindergarten, and renovated lunchroom and meeting space, enhanced the school. In the fall 2000, IHM offered two half-day kindergarten programs (AM and PM) for the IHM community. The church renovation was completed in the spring of 2005.

In November 2005, Immaculate Heart of Mary School was named a National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education. The National Blue Ribbon is a prestigious award granted to private schools that achieve in the top 10% among the nation's schools. Principal Annette Jones, Patty Koors, kindergarten teacher, Teresa Cooper, junior high teacher, and Jeanne Hasbrook, junior high teacher, represented the IHM community in Washington, D.C. The IHM staff members were recognized at two major ceremonies, the United States Department of Education event and at the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) celebration. In late November, Mrs. Rebecca Coan, regional representative from the United States Department of Education visited our school and formally presented the National Blue Ribbon Award to the IHM community.

In the fall of 2007, IHM completed Phase I of the renovation project. The school library was moved to the second floor of the Activity Center (former locker rooms). A second kindergarten classroom was constructed in the former library area. Beginning with the 2007-2008, IHM offered two full-day kindergarten classes with an AM options to the families. Eight classrooms received an updated look with fresh paint, improved lighting, new carpet, storage cabinets, and SmartBoard technology. Phase II of the construction project will begin in the spring of 2008.
