About Mrs. Flora |
 |
I am Diane Flora the Reading Specialist for grades K-4. I have taught for thirty-nine years in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. For twenty-seven years I was a second through fifth grade classroom teacher. For the last twelve years I have worked with the primary grades in Reading enrichment and remediation. My undergraduate degree is in elementary education from Ball State University. I completed my Masters degree at Butler University in elementary education with a Reading Endorsement. My training also includes Orton-Gillingham (a multi-sensory approach to Phonics), Lindamood-Bell (LIPS, Visualizing & Verbalizing), 4-Blocks, and Tucker Signing.

IHM's Reading Program |
 |
Our Reading Resource program is based on the needs of each student. I assess each student throughout the year to determine his/her strengths and areas of improvement. The classroom teacher and I work together to formulate strategies and techniques. Intervention may occur through large group, flexible small group, or individual instruction. My instruction is based on a multi-sensory approach. I engage as many modalities as possible to help each student integrate the skills he/she will need to become a successful, independent reader.

Helpful Hints |
 |
Here are a few helpful hints to help parents create successful, independent readers:
1. READ, READ, READ to your child as much as possible!
2. If you are helping your child choose a book, use the Five Finger Rule. If there are more than five words on the first page of the book which your child cannot read, choose another book.
3. To help build comprehension skills, ask your child to summarize what he/she read. Ask: Who?, What?, When?, Where?, Why? and How? Questions. Enjoy the results!
